UFC 63 and 64
How about that UFC 63 with Matt Hughes and BJ Penn? What a fight! I have held Matt Hughes in high regard for a long time, but this was a great fighter showing just why he is the undisputed best at his game. BJ Penn was dominating Matt Hughes in the first two rounds and almost had Hughes at the end of round 2 with an arm bar... it was so close that if the same things had happened 30 seconds earlier, Hughes might have been defeated. As it was, he showed the world just how big his heart is and how much game he really has in him.
BJ Penn lost another fight as a result of lack of conditioning. The guy is such a skilled and gifted fighter, but he's let himself down more than once. Had BJ Penn showed up with conditioning to match the great Matt Hughes, we might have a new welterweight champion by now. As it is, we await the next most likely championship match between Matt Hughes and George "Rush" St. Pierre. Hughes has already beaten GSP, but I think that this next fight will be an even tougher test for the champ. As much as I have to cheer for my Canadian compatriot, and I do hope that GSP can pull it out, I think Matt will come through again and remain the most dominant and most deserving welterweight champion in the game.
On another note, UFC 64 is upcoming: two belts are on the line and the stakes are high. Champion Rich Franklin defends his title against a relative newcomer in Anderson Silva for the middleweight championship. In the lightweight division, Kenny Florian faces Sean Sherk. Both matches should be good ones and each has the potential to be outstanding. The UFC has had some great bouts recently and we, as fans, have been the primary beneficiaries. I expect Rich Franklin to remain "Unstoppable" (as the fight promos suggest) and retain his belt, as well as seeing Kenny Florian grab the lightweight belt. I stand to be proven wrong, but as long as the action is good and the fighters put up - I'll be happy!
